Microsoft Power BI is a business intelligence platform that’s often leveraged by criminal justice agencies for communicating crime statistics and open data to the public. Its ability to handle large volumes of data and create relationships between distinct tables, however, also lends itself to investigative work and internal uses. The first part of this class will provide an overview of Power BI, including its technical capabilities, security, and means of sharing. The second part of the class will discuss how Power BI can be scaled and molded to assist with investigations, monitoring, briefing, and alerting; from organizing the files of an individual case to keeping tabs on a city’s sex offenders.
